Safety cautions with alcohol and other medicines
Children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chicken pox or flu-like symptoms should not use this product. The label says changes in behavior with nausea and vomiting can be an early sign of Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious illness, and to consult a doctor.
Do not take it if you are allergic to salicylates (including aspirin) or if you take other salicylate products. Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take a daily aspirin, a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin), or a medicine for diabetes, arthritis, or gout. That list is the label (anticoagulation, diabetes, gout, arthritis) plus MedlinePlus. The label does not name ibuprofen or other NSAIDs. NIAAA says aspirin and ibuprofen can increase acid and irritate the stomach, as alcohol can. Ask a pharmacist before combining them, and see Advil or Tylenol for a hangover.
Do not use it if you have an ulcer, a bleeding problem, or bloody or black stool. During use, a temporary but harmless darkening of the stool and/or tongue may occur, and MedlinePlus says it usually goes away in a few days after you stop. Stop and ask a doctor if symptoms get worse, if they or the diarrhea last more than 2 days, or if ringing or hearing loss occurs. MedlinePlus says to call immediately for ringing or buzzing, and uses 48 hours as the diarrhea limit. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a health professional. Take a tetracycline such as doxycycline at least 1 hour before or 3 hours after this medicine.
"Overindulgence in food and drink" does not mean Pepto-Bismol changes alcohol metabolism or makes driving safe. NIAAA says attention, decision-making, and coordination can be impaired during a hangover.
- This is not medical advice.
- Confusion, vomiting while barely responsive, slow or irregular breathing, or a person you cannot wake: call 911. That is alcohol poisoning, not a hangover.
